How to Repost an Instagram Post to a Story

Most Instagram posts made by public accounts can be shared as part of your Instagram story for your followers to see. This is the only official way to share a post made by other people on Instagram, and it's popular due to its simplicity and how it links back to the original creator.

  1. Open the post you want to share, then tap the paper airplane icon > Add to story.

If you don't see this button, either the account isn't public or they've disabled post resharing.

  2. The post appears embedded in a new Instagram story. You can now add the usual text, music, etc.

  3. Tap Your story to publish as a new Instagram story.

How to Share an Instagram Story on Your Own Account

While it's possible to share some Instagram stories made by others to your followers, it must meet some requirements:

  • The account must be public. You can't share a story from a private Instagram account.
  • It must have Instagram story sharing enabled.
  • You need to be tagged in the story.

When you're tagged in an Instagram story, you'll receive a DM via Instagram Direct notifying you. If the account tagging you is public and allows sharing of their content, you should see a link in the message; to repost this story within a new story on your account, tap Add This to Your Story, and then proceed with the instructions from above.

How to Repost an Instagram Story if You’re Not Tagged

While there are numerous third-party apps that let you repost someone else’s Instagram posts, there aren’t any that support the reposting of Instagram stories. One way to get around this restriction is to use your device’s screenshot or screen recording features.

For example, you can take a screenshot of someone else’s Instagram story while you’re watching it, and then upload that screenshot to a new story. Likewise, you can use screen recording to record an Instagram story video, then repost that video in your own story.

Menus and other UI elements are included in screen recordings. You can remove these by using two fingers to move and resize the video while composing your new story.

How to Repost a Video or Photo Post on Instagram

There's no built-in way to repost just a photo or repost videos on Instagram to your profile. To get around this restriction, you can use a third-party app. Fortunately, there are several for both iOS and Android, and most are free to use.

Download Repost for Instagram from Google Play if you have an Android device, or get Reposter from the App Store if you have an iOS device. Both are free and don’t require you to log in with your Instagram or Facebook account.

The following instructions are for the Repost for Instagram Android app, but the steps are practically identical in other apps like this one.

  1. Install the app, then open Instagram on the same device and find the post you want to repost.

  2. Tap the paper airplane icon, then choose Share.

  3. Tap the app you installed. For this example, we'll choose Repost for IG.
